Compassionate Machines: Giving Human Values To Artificial Intelligence
We’ve arrived at a critical crossroad with the development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) in our lives. A.I. is now teaching our children in schools, running the grids that power everything in our lives, including our water systems and the daily operation of offices, businesses and homes. In this module, Gregg will explore how the rapid rise in A.I. technology has outpaced the morality of how it is to be implemented in society and our daily lives, and why leaders in the field, including visionary innovator Elon Musk (who describes unregulated A.I. as a danger even greater than nuclear war when it comes to the future of modern civilization) must be the ones to insist we put our foot on the brakes to slow us down before it’s too late. Gregg will also explain his role in the effort to introduce compassion into intelligent systems as an opportunity to choose the kind of A.I. that runs our lives and avoid the dangers Musk is concerned about, and how you can recognize these principles as they’re introduced into our lives. The question is: Whose idea of compassion will be modeled into the machines? The answer is where science is stuck: We must first understand compassion in our own lives before we can imbue machines with this cherished human quality.
